How Many Meals Did The Avon Lake Food Fight Raise For Second Harvest?

Yesterday, Thogus had the revealing event of the total number of meals raised during the Second Harvest Avon Lake Food Fight.  For the second year in a row, Avon Lake companies participated in a friendly competition on raising meals for Second Harvest.  Both the overall number of meals raised and the top company was announced.  The top company received a 3D printed trophy! 2013 Crain's Giving Guide

"'Tis An Important Season For Giving" is right.  Thogus and Second Harvest partner up again to host the 2nd Annual Food Fight on Pin Oak Parkway.  "We are all feeling very lucky at this time of year that we are employed and our company is successful and doing well, and we want to give back to the community that we live and work in," said Katie Kuczinski, Thogus' Human Capital Coordinator.  This year's goal is to provide 100,000 meals between all participating companies on Pin Oak Parkway.  The award ceremony will take place on Wednesday, December 11th at Thogus from 5-6 PM.  At the time, we will learn the total contribution of the campaign and the winner for the most donations by a company/organization.

Why Corporate Wellness is Important...

Many of us look back on our earlier days and remember the bodies, fitness, and good health we used to have.  It’s not that we decided not to be active and fit anymore, but it just happened.  Why?  What made this change come about?  The answer could be a number of things from injury to starting a family.  However, for many the answer is work.  Thogus has recognized this as an issue and in response instituted its Corporate Wellness program.  Included in this program is access to the new gym and workout space in Thogus itself, as well as a partnership with a local fitness business, T3 Performance, through which all employees have access to trainers, classes, nutrition plans, and state of the art facilities for little to no cost.  For a number of employees, work is no longer an excuse getting in the way of living a healthy lifestyle, and no one epitomizes this more so than Scott Rhodes.  

Scott Rhodes started the Corporate Wellness program when it first began in May of 2011.  At that time he weighed between 250 and 260lbs, and he was determined to shed the weight.  He started on a two day per week schedule, going in to T3 after he got off his night shift from 9-10 a.m.  After a while Scott moved to day shift, and soon after decided to join the morning workout group that met at 6 a.m. on a four day per week basis.  He has been working out in the mornings before work for the past year and a half and continues to do so. 

Today Scott weighs around 205lbs, a total loss of about 50-60lbs, and has trimmed out 50% of his body fat; it’s an amazing transformation.  But Scott says the structured regimen designed by the trainers at T3 has not only changed him physically, but also carried over and positively influenced other areas of his life.  The dedication and commitment required to wake up every morning and go to the gym and give it your all has instilled in Scott a strong sense of discipline and an even greater work ethic.  These two traits have translated over to his professional life, as anyone will tell you Scott is one of the hardest workers around, hands down.  His new body allows him to excel in fulfilling the rigorous responsibilities of a material handler, as he has more energy, strength, and stamina to complete his daily tasks.  Our new and improved Scott not only excels at work but more importantly at home.  He now has the energy to be more active with his kids, for he even helps coach his son’s soccer team, something he never would have given himself a chance at two years ago.  As opposed to lounging around during the weekends, he is always active, whether it’s camping with his family or going golfing with his buddies. 

The Corporate Wellness program also offered Scott the opportunity to spend more time with his coworkers outside of work, something he has found to be an extremely rewarding and enriching experience.  As a result of joining the morning workout group, he has developed bonds and friendships with his coworkers and superiors that he says he would not have bloomed otherwise.  Scott noticed that the teamwork atmosphere at T3 translates over to Thogus, and when they are collaborating at work they definitely see how training together has helped a great deal.  It’s a unique group dynamic that has been cultivated, for although the participants range from hourly wage employees to the president of the company, everyone is equal in the gym.  They are all there putting in the same work to achieve their individual goals, but doing it together, and that’s what matters.

The Importance of an Internship

An internship is an invaluable experience for any college student. Before receiving that diploma, it is imperative for each student to begin his/her professional career while still in school. This parallel experience exposes students to real-life application of academic theory and teachings, acclimates prospective graduates to various professional cultures, and builds the students personal brand and professional network.

More important than academics is having the knowledge and experience to apply them. Each internship provides a student with real-life problem-solving skills in a professional atmosphere. As a double major at Cleveland State University with two years ago, I chose to participate in multiple internships in parallel with my academic career because school can only teach us so much. College teaches us the theories and fundamentals applied in our industries, but life experiences make those fundamentals a reality with complex problems and evolutionary solutions. Confucius verbalizes this concept best: “I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.”

As well as acclimating the student to the professional realm of business, interning is a chance to find one's niche in the grand scheme of one's career. A business is about more than just processes and people. Each company has a culture structured through missions and values, implemented through management, and executed through people. Thogus has a unique, family-like culture and set of processes known as “the Thogus way.” Thogus and its people have created a welcoming, energetic, high-paced environment providing a productive and pleasant work space for all. An internship gives the student a jumpstart on finding where he or she fits as an individual. After all, as human beings, we long to fit in a culture similar to who we are and how we think. The culture is the face of the company.

Lastly, every internship helps a student develop a professional network all her (or his) own. During this fast-paced and communication-driven generation, the importance of networking is at an all-time high. Every student will establish connections all over the city in which she works to build her “personal brand.” Thogus has been an amazing opportunity to learn with this team as they grow and expand and meet some fantastic people to remain in my network of professional people for years to come.

              My internship at Thogus has been an eye-opening experience. I have never worked somewhere so many people were happy with where they work. As a rapidly growing small business, Thogus is commemorated for its game-changing innovation and technology in the manufacturing industry as well as ability to maintain a positive, energetic work atmosphere. “The Thogus Experience” has been memorable for from a perspective of real-life application, great culture, and fantastic additions to my network.

JALEX Medical: FDA Cleared or Approved? That is the question…

I always hear people say “XYZ Company got their medical device approved by the FDA”.
But was the device approved or cleared for market? What’s the difference one might ask? It’s
all in the name of the application and class the device falls under. For instance, if you have a
Class II device, a 510k submission is required. After review, the FDA will provide you with
a “clearance” letter allowing the company to market the device. The FDA does not “approve”
Class II devices. They simply review your application and either agree or disagree that you have provided enough information that your device is substantially equivalent to another device on the market.

However, the FDA does “approve” Class III devices submitted in a PMA (Premarket
Approval) application. Class III devices are typically new and novel with no other device on
the market to compare with. The application requirements and review process are much more
extensive and the device will be considered “approved” by the FDA once complete.

New Year’s Resolution: Think Quality

The start of the New Year is not just a time to start a new diet or exercise regimen, it’s also a great time to examine quality in your facility and documentation.

Here are some questions to consider:

  • Are your quality records in order?
  • Are you following all written procedures and work instructions?
  • Is all of your training and training records up to date?
  • Have you had an internal audit recently? If an audit were performed today, what would be the outcome?
  • Is it time for your management review?
  • Are there areas you see that need improvement

It’s a new year and a great time to think “Quality” at your company. We know it seems like a lot, however, it’s good to get underway now. Let’s work together to make sure we are all part of the solution and not the problem!
