Lead Replacement

Lead-free, hazardous-free

RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) [link to RoHS website] directives are giving us fair warning that all medical devices must become lead-free within the next few years. For manufacturers in non-medical device industries, this lead-free directive already applies to them.

Though many materials can serve as replacements for lead, not many materials can shield radiation as effectively as lead. So what does this mean for manufacturers of medical devices?  They will need to find a safe solution that doesn’t compromise the radiation shielding properties. Sure enough, we happen to have that very solution.

Our partner company, Radiation Protection Technologies, molds tungsten-filled polymers – a safe substance that blocks radiation at the same rates as lead.

Testing--both on prototypes and actual products already in use--has proven that tungsten-filled polymer products provide radiation shielding/attenuation up to, and including, a one-to-one equivalency to lead. And that’s without leakage or hot spots. Our solution is now being used by global medical device manufacturers.
