Position Overview:
The Tooling Manager is responsible for maintaining a broad range of injection mold tooling, parts and associated components to support manufacturing operations at Thogus Products. In addition, the Tooling Manager is responsible for designing jigs and fixtures for production or experimental use. The Tooling Manager will study specifications and confer with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and costs of tooling. This role is also responsible for machine programming, set up, and execution on the fabrication of components needed for tooling or fixturing. The Tooling Manager is responsible for the supervising and training other employees in mold maintenance, mold repair, conventional machining and CNC operation. This individual is expected to perform job responsibilities according to the company’s core values.

Essential Job Functions:
- Manages existing tool modifications and repairs and in conjunction with program managers
- Contributes as a key stakeholder on new tooling projects Participates in product design reviews with customers for manufacturing feasibility
- Participates in tooling design reviews to ensure best practices are considered prior to tool fabrication launch
- Manages integration of tooling and machining necessary for automation.
- Transfer Tooling
- Develops check sheet for transfer tool evaluation (including photos) repairs, notifications that the customer needs to be made aware of before sampling the tool
- Reviews, inspects, and approves the safe use of transfer tooling into production equipment at Thogus Products
- Prepares any pricing to engineering/sales for repairs, modifications, engineering changes, new tool builds, and fixtures.
- Confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to materials, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing processes and costs of tooling.
- Manages team of technicians, tool makers & machinists so that daily activity supports production schedule execution.
- Develops key metrics for tooling team growth and communicates expectations through organization-wide performance reviews. Monitors and measures the ability for team members to meet expectations and takes corrective action to ensure compliance and understanding of key metrics.
- Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement of tooling or machining processes to reduce production down time, improve efficiency, and reduce quality deviations.
- Conveys information clearly and effectively through formal and informal documents, creating an atmosphere in which timely and high-quality information flows smoothly.
- Supports Engineering, Maintenance, and Quality Assurance on significant technical projects and New Tooling projects.
- Develops solutions to mold and tool making design problems, ensuring the proper mold making practices are followed, generation of 3D CAD/CAM models, etc, are all executed properly.
- Works with Engineering on fixture fabrication for development projects including providing input into design process.
- Supports the production floor to evaluate manufacturing issues in the determination in the root cause (tooling, process, machine, material, etc.)
- Participate as a project stakeholder in the review of simulations such as with Moldflow software.
- Performs/participates in initial risk assessment and establishes tooling and processing parameters for new tooling programs.
- Performs/participates in yearly risk assessment for exiting tooling with key accounts identified by Leadership.
- Critical stakeholder for Design for Manufacturability reviews.
- Navigates the ERP System (IQMS) and asset management module. This includes using the ERP system to help manage tooling availability, location, and maintenance activity.
- Meets company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis and performs all work-related tasks in a manner that follows all Company policies and procedures.
- Participates and represents the organization as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in both internal and external audits and demonstrations for injection mold tooling.
- Contributes as necessary to process troubleshooting, and optimization.
- Takes direction from the Director of Engineering as to daily activities.

Required Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Injection Mold Tooling including mold bases and mold insert milling
- Turning and Grinding Equipment
- Wire and Sinker EDM systems
- Effective, and timely communication between the customer, sales, tooling vendors and other internal departments
Education, Training and/or Experience
- Four-year technical degree and/or
- Minimum of 10 years of related experience and/or training
- Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Five or more years of broad based experience in injection mold design
- Experience in maintaining tool room function including personnel preferred
- Proficient understanding of drawing analysis, i.e. AutoCAD/Solidworks or other.
Language Skills
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
- Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
Reasoning Ability
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Computer Skills
- Proficient in or willing to learn Enterprise Resource Program (IQMS desired)
- Competent with MS Office programs and Internet, required
- Competent with interpretation of Drawing Software (AutoCAD, Solidworks, etc.) required
- Proficient with Moldflow simulation software, preferred
- Proficient in 3-D Modeling, , Solidworks, required
- Proficient in MasterCam, Cimatron, or other programming software, preferred
Other Skills and Abilities:
- General understanding of the Injection Molding manufacturing process and polymer materials
